Minnesota Alcohol and Pain Lab (MAPL)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Minnesota Alcohol and Pain Lab (MAPL), directed by Dr. Jeff Boissoneault, is to advance understanding of the association between pain and the use of alcohol and other substances. We aim to generate new insights and treatments that will improve quality of life for people with pain and those at risk for alcohol-related harms. Our research also addresses non-pharmacologic treatments for chronic pain, placebo mechanisms, pain- and substance-related clinical decision making, and development of novel technologies for the assessment of alcohol use.

We are strongly committed to scientific rigor and integrity, as well as making every effort to reduce stigma and promote science-based clinical practice regarding pain management and alcohol treatment. Finally, we place a high priority on developing and maintaining MAPL as an inclusive, diverse, and supportive environment in which to work and train.
